PLANO - Eric Zastoupil scored 22 points to go with seven rebounds, and John Roberson impressed in his Texas high school basketball debut Tuesday as Plano rolled past Garland Naaman Forest, 68-37, [ box score ] at the Plano Senior High Activity Center.
Plano built a 49-34 lead after three periods, and then held Naaman Forest to 3 points in the fourth.
Roberson, a move-in from Florida, dazzled the home crowd with sharp shooting, quick hands, good vision and a lightning-quick first step. He finished with 14 points and six assists and connected on two alley-oop dunks with Joseph Fulce.
"John changes the entire dynamics of this team," Plano coach Tom Inman said. "He's another guy you have to account for. Who are you going to double team now?"
With strong finishers in Zastoupil and Fulce, Plano (1-0) has the weapons to run with any team in the area.
However, things didn't start fast and furious for either team on Tuesday.
Plano jumped to an early 15-8 lead but the first period looked like a typical first quarter from the season's first game. Both teams missed a number of open looks and turned the ball much too often.
Naaman Forest got their offense on track in the second period and stayed even with Plano, 16-16, but the Wildcats maintained a 31-24 halftime lead.
From there, the Plano defense took over. Plano held Naaman Forest to 13 points in the second half and pulled away at the end.
Fulce finished with 10 points and seven boards. Tyler Roof added 6 points, and Anteus Mann contributed 6 off the bench.
